Let’s get into what I mean by the Entitlement Culture, and how it impacts what we see on our television screens. I’ve never really been an, ‘agree with the crowds’ type of person … and I’m ok with that. I love that about me, to be honest.
I didn’t Hate the End of Game of Thrones, like most people. Cause I accepted what the story gave us. – Most people hate it, cause it didn’t go how “they” wanted it to go.
This is the problem with people nowadays. Entitlement – people want everything ‘their way’ – and aren’t all that open to surprise; Lots of disdain for ‘new’ … people want that same old same …
Plus, I’ll admit that I would’ve liked to see Cersie and Jamie go out differently; that’s what most of us wanted. She was such a villain, and even though Jamie kind of redeemed himself, we still don’t fool with him like that ….
As far as we’re concerned, ole Dirty Unc from Iron Islands could’ve taken him out; and it would’ve been just fine … and oh man, it would’ve been dope to see Arya be the one, to slice ole’ ‘Queen Mother’ up ……. but instead; she gets to simply have, the rocks of Kings Landing fall on her; and gets to die with her lover/brother – kinda too peaceful …
But, at the same time, it is what it is; and in a way, it’s still kinda ‘dope’ – how the story went; the castle they loved so much and did so much DIRT for; ended up, literally being the END Of them both! That’s actually much better ‘writing’ than most of the people crying over the ending, could have delivered.
Folks got mad at how Jon Snow and Khaleesi ended … but I mean; she was goin crazy like her pops; all those years of inbreeding, them dragon folk literally are crazy as hell.
It was questionable before, but the way she went to work on king’s landing, left no doubt; she was about to have the 7 kingdoms under tyranny ….
Jon, who stayed struggling with tough decisions, had a very tough one there.
I know people would’ve liked to see a different ending though. An ending like, her and Jon ruling together. I mean he’s the ‘rightful’ ruler anyways, ‘but’ she’s also Jon’s Aunt; Jon Snow don’t get down like that; which, was making her super upset too … adding fuel to her fire …
There is no way, ‘what people wanted to see‘ would have realistically worked out. What happened, is actually what should have happened – whether people are ok with her ‘seemingly‘ snapping suddenly, or will allow themselves to realize she was slowly unraveling all along …. (again whether they realize this, are ok with it, or not)
What we know from 7 previous seasons, is that Jon never wanted to rule. He didn’t even like running the Night’s Watch; him leaving it all for the ‘true north’ … is a fitting end for that character. Also, fitting ending for Bran ‘The Broken’, being the one to sit on the throne. Nobody is really ‘wiser’ than the 3 eyed raven. He doesn’t have the ‘needs’ to do wrong like other Kings, he’s not going mad, and dude can see all points in time; past, present, and even, future.
Why wouldn’t that be the most obvious choice, to be the King, and rebuild it all?!
…. So yea, I didn’t hate it, like a lot of people did.
Looking at a few more shows, that ‘the people’ hate; cause this Entitlement culture makes people think their Opinions are all that matter.
Going over to the MCU, I don’t hate Eternals. Not sure if it’s my love for history, that I see tie-ins with what I’ve studied – and just like how they went about presenting all that info to us; or because I didn’t go into it ‘wanting’ more than what they planned on giving me. I didn’t feel ‘entitled’ for the film to cater to what I wanted to see. I went in, to watch what was presented. Overall, I thought it was a well told story – that spans literal centuries of time.
Same with Matrix 4; I just hoped it would maintain the ‘idea energy’ from the original story. Lots of people however were mad at the movie cause it didn’t have the same ‘action scenes‘ — and to me, that’s not a valid reason to dislike a film.
The matrix films are not about action scenes.
A story is being told, about Human Beings, about Control, about Freedom, about Power and Choice – the fight scenes are a bonus. Always have been. They symbolize the literal struggle of the powerful vs. the powerless.
I’m not demanding that Original Morphues and original Agent Smith be in the film, for it to be good. I’m not ‘entitled’ to that. None of us are. That would be like hating Revolutions cause they recast The Oracle, when the original actress who played her, passed away between films; … and yep, some folks actually did that; I recall it; cause this issue isn’t new.

We live in a culture that has grown accustom to getting what they want, on demand.
When they cannot get what they want, a tantrum is sure to follow. How is this entitlement culture impacting TV shows and Films? Well, there may have been serious plans for a Matrix 5, but now? We may never know what happens next in that one. Same goes for Eternals, as the MCU was clearly setting that up to tell us much, much more. Doubt we ever get a conclusion there.
We are beyond spoiled, with so much to keep us distracted – and entitlement is keeping us from appreciating it all. None of us, oftentimes, are entitled, to the things we believe we are.
