What’s The Real Issue

So there is nation, no worldwide attention and uproar because multitalented cookbook author and tv personality Paula Deen made some “racist” remarks and has now resulted in her termination from Food Network & outside sponsors.

I for one have several points of view on the issue; some of which may not be liked, while others may be intrigued. My 1st point is that yes while slavery and use of a term given to Black people by slave owners is wrong. However, due to the total breakdown of my ancestors and their mental strength, at some point, they started to believe that they were exactly what they were being referred to as. Nigger get this & fetch that for me nigger were just a couple of commends issued on a daily basis in the 18 to the mid 1900’s. There is never a reason to treat anyone blessed enough to have life in such a matter to degrade their very existence.

With that being said, we are now in the year 2013 and racism is still a major issue and for what? What happened to our ancestors happened to them and because it happened to them it is responsible for the type of people that we all turned out to be. I don’t know about anyone else but my skin color does not begin to signify who I am. I appear to be Black (African American) on the outside, but my roots run way deeper than even I can imagine. I know for a fact that I have roots that wrap around this entire planet so just to claim I am one thing is ludicrous. In the beginning of population you can claim to be just one race but that is no longer the case.

My point is this: Ms. Deen used a derogatory term almost 30 years ago and she is catching hell for it now and for what? No one is perfect. Where’s the tolerance or does tolerance not apply to this situation or any others like it? Secondly, why do folks have a hard time with the word nigger when white people created the term in the first place. The real question is who gave the word meaning? And, if you feel so strong about the word, maybe you feel chained like your predecessors… Fact is we must stop all the persecution and manipulation that transpires in our lives. stop giving people reasons or the satisfaction of thinking that they are better than you just because of the tone of your flesh. Stop calling white people “crackers”, Asian people “ching-chongs”, black people “niggers”, and so forth. I don’t get it, we laugh at racist jokes by our favorite comedians, but can’t handle it when we get the same terms thrown at us? What the hell is wrong with that picture?!

One of these days people are going to open more than just their eyes or ears and learn to use all of their senses to understand the life that we are living and what needs to be done. I think this whole situation is being blown way out of the water and can’t stand the direction this thing is headed in. There are 2 times in life when race doesn’t matter: when your born, and when you’re in the ground. Oh I’ll add a 3rd, race doesn’t matter period! Race card always gets played when someone is a threat. Just learn to be better or hone your craft (whatever it may be). We were created as equals, but man’s need for attention and power tainted and corrupted the works. Now we have to find it in ourselves to rise above the nonsense and bull and start taking care of one another and not bring them lower than they already are.

I don’t care if Ms. Deen said it or not. Look at what she is doing for a generation, better yet for a nation of people who enjoys what she does on a regular basis. It is comical to me when older folks do or say things that would turn a tomato crimson with embarrassment. Who are we to judge for someone’s verbiage? Last I checked this was a country of free speech (unless you say something politically incorrect). It is just high time that we stop worrying ourselves with the next slip up someone else makes and worry more with how food is going to get on our tables, sheltering the homeless, shutting down the rising cost of student tuitions, & so on. This issue isn’t paying our bills, or keeping homes out of foreclosure. So to all you sponsors out there who are “worried” about their customer base, I guess we know where your concerns lye (in your wallets).

I’ve said all that I need to say & if you don’t like it, prove me wrong on EVERY Point that I have made.

About Linds McDonald

Hello, there!

There is not much to know about me, really, except that I am an aspiring writer. I am currently working on two projects. First, and foremost, I have been working away on my novel, currently titled “As Clay”. My great-grandparents came to America from Ireland in the 1900s, and my strong Irish heritage has always interested me. “As Clay” is a fantastical but Christian tale of Irish history, and I hope, the first in a trilogy. (Planned titles are: “As Clay”, “Burning”, and “Vessel”.)

Isaiah 64:8
Yet you, LORD, are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.

2 Corinthians 4:7
But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.

My less serious, but possibly more engrossing, project that I have been working on is, I am a little abashed to say, a fan fiction for Harry Potter. I know that it sounds completely juvenile, lol. But it is great fun, and a very productive learning experience. It’s titled “Still I Rise” and is inspired by Maya Angelou’s poem of the same name.
